Join Cantor Stuart Binder for a discussion of Edward Kritzler’s groundbreaking book, “Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean” and learn how a generation of swashbuckling Jews carved out an empire in the New World in their quest for treasure, religious freedom and revenge. In this lively work, Kritzler tells the tale of an unlikely group of Jews who took to the high seas in the aftermath of the Spanish Inquisition.  In ships bearing such names as The Prophet Samuel, Queen Esther and the Shield of Abraham, they attacked and plundered the Spanish fleet while forming alliances with other European powers to ensure the safety of Jews living in hiding. The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard Street

Kosher Café West
Thursday, June 16, 2016 at 12:30 p.m.
Congregation Beth Chaim (329 Village Rd. East, Princeton Junction)

This story of an immigrant girl’s transformation into a business woman in early 20th century New York.  As a child in 1913, Malka Treynovsky flees Russia for New York with her family–only to be crippled and abandoned in the streets. Taken in by a tough-loving Italian ices peddler, Malka survives. When she falls in love with Albert, they set off together across America in an ice cream truck to seek their fortune; slowly, she transforms herself into Lillian Dunkle, “The Ice Cream Queen of America.” Spanning 70 years, Lillian’s rise is inextricably linked to the course of American history itself, from Prohibition to the disco days of Studio 54. And when her past starts catching up with her, her world implodes spectacularly.

A kosher lunch will be served and registration is required by 6/10.  RSVP to Beth Englezos at bethe@jfcsonline.org or 609-987-8100, ext. 126. The program is open to all and there is a suggested donation of $5.00 per person.
